Compare the edge shape, direction of use and handle format for the cut you want to make. A sloyd knife, hook knife, scorp, bent gouge and mallet V-tool add different functions. More blades do not remove the need to check handedness, sweep and supplied handles.

Start with sloyd or detail knives for the corresponding knife work; compare the KN15 chip-carving shape, KN34 skew detail and KN31 mini-detail references by their actual edges. For hollows, compare hook knives, the KN23 scorp and bent gouges. The cutting shape and working approach matter more than a shared description such as “spoon tool.”
Handedness and handle format
The retained KN26, KN52 and Morakniv 164 references have specific selected cutting arrangements; check each page before choosing a hand or direction. The SK107 has interchangeable blades and a handle; the JKN291 folds several functions into one tool. The MC305 gouge and MC360 V-tool belong to fixed-handle mallet formats. Do not assume every carving blade accepts the same driving method.
Add a function rather than a near-duplicate
A flexible KN16 drawknife and Morakniv’s splitting drawknife differ in format. BeaverCraft’s short-bent, long-bent and straight gouges also differ in access and profile. Compare those differences against the tools already on your bench. Published sweep, width and overall length are separate measurements; a generic carving guide is not an exact model’s instruction sheet.
Questions before you choose
Can I choose any hook knife just by my dominant hand?
Check the selected model’s edge and working direction. The product page identifies the retained variant; the word “hook” alone does not establish the cutting arrangement.
Does every blade in this department suit a mallet?
No. The catalogue distinguishes fixed-handle mallet tools from knives, interchangeable carving systems and other formats. Follow the exact tool instructions.
Is a wider gouge automatically a deeper sweep?
Width and sweep describe different parts of the profile. Read both where confirmed; do not infer a curvature from the millimeter width.
