What this tool adds
What this tool adds to your bench
Choose this gouge when a carving task calls for a tool designed to accept mallet work. The selected listing describes use by hand or mallet, including larger projects and denser hardwoods. That is the practical distinction from the BeaverCraft short-bent gouge, whose instructions exclude a mallet.
The MC305 combines a No. 5 curved profile with a nominal 11/16-inch cutting width, also labelled 17 mm by Flexcut. The sweep number describes curvature; it does not mean a 5 mm width or a five-piece set. Check both the shape and the working width against the surface you intend to remove.
The selected listing identifies a 1095 high-carbon blade and an ash handle. This is one complete fixed-handle gouge, rather than a loose interchangeable cutter. Its profile chart helps identify the selected curve among other tools, but those other sizes and shapes are not supplied with this single-tool offer.
Compare it for substantial carving where its width, curve and mallet-capable construction fit the work. The short-bent hand gouge offers a different handle-clearance arrangement, while the broad Pfeil Ro Bern set serves larger sculptural profiles. Choose by the actual contact and working method rather than assuming that a larger assortment is always the better purchase.
Choose for your actual work
- Compare sweep and width together with the area to be carved.
- Choose an explicitly mallet-capable tool when that is your intended working method.
Fit checks & limits
- No permitted mallet force, universal wood performance or maximum cut depth is established.
- No other profile in the chart is included.
- Nominal 17 mm and 11/16-inch labels do not establish an exact measured edge width.
Use & care
Use a matching curved strop profile under Flexcut’s maintenance guidance.
Protect the steel from damp storage.
Questions before you choose
Can I use it like the hand-only bent gouge?
The selected MC305 is described for either hand or mallet work. The bent hand gouge has a different approach and excludes a mallet; compare both method and clearance.
What does No. 5 tell me?
It identifies the curved sweep profile. The cutting width is listed separately as nominal 11/16 inch, with 17 mm as the maker’s metric label.
Would the large Pfeil set replace it directly?
Not as the same profile and width. The Ro Bern set has broad 50–60 mm edges and a different mix of carving shapes. Compare the actual surface and scale of the work.
