Choose the cutting shape and working access before deciding how many chisels to buy. Mortising, long-reach paring, skew cuts and squaring a corner call for different tool formats, and a complete set is useful only when its actual sizes match your work.

The Narex 863600 mortise set and Richter 853600 bevel-edge set cover different tool families. Compare the actual blade sizes and intended work on their pages rather than using the number of pieces as the decision. The Kakuri 3 mm oire nomi is a narrow individual choice, not a replacement for every width in a set.
Reach and access change the choice
Compare the long straight paring chisel with Narex’s offset-neck paring format when handle and blade access matter. The 6 mm left/right skew pair addresses opposed corners; it is two handed shapes rather than two ordinary bevel-edge chisels. A larger 30 mm carpenter’s chisel is another role, not simply a broader detail tool.
Two kinds of corner chisel
The Narex 10 × 10 mm corner chisel and spring-loaded Milescraft 2220 are different mechanisms. Check the corner geometry, how the tool is held or registered, and the selected product’s instructions. Do not assume a spring-loaded accessory has the reach, blade format or working method of a conventional handled chisel.
Questions before you choose
Is the largest chisel set the most complete choice?
Only if its actual widths and tool family suit the joints. A mortise set does not supply the offset reach or paired skew shapes of the specialist references.
Why compare an offset-neck and a straight paring chisel?
They position the handle relative to the cutting work differently. Check the available hand clearance and working access rather than choosing solely by the nominal blade width.
When does a left/right skew pair add a useful function?
The opposed skew shapes offer different corner access from a conventional straight edge. Compare the cutting approach at your joint; the retained 6 mm pair is a specialist geometry choice rather than a broad set of general chisel widths.
