What this tool adds

What this tool adds to your bench

This saddle square carries a fixed 1:6 dovetail slope across adjoining faces. Rest it over the board corner and use the appropriate face for your pin or tail layout. The saddle format is useful when you want the reference to register over the corner rather than reposition a separate angle template on each face.

The selected tool is marked 1:6, approximately 9.5 degrees. Rockler describes that slope for softwood dovetails. It is one fixed-angle marker; choose the Clarke Brothers tool if you want several slope options rather than expecting this square to adjust.

Rockler specifies anodized aluminum, a textured finger hold and a hanging hole. The stock-thickness capacity is up to 1-1/4 inches. Its square leg is 2-1/4 inches long and overall width is 2 inches, so compare both the capacity and the available registration surface with your work.

The tool supplies layout references, not a cutting fence or a guarantee of joint fit. You still choose the spacing and follow the marks when sawing. A marking knife can complement the square where a scored line is useful; it does not change the square’s fixed slope or thickness capacity.

Choose for your actual work

  • Match the fixed slope to your layout plan.
  • Check the corner registration and stock thickness before buying.

Fit checks & limits

  • Use this tool to lay out the selected 1:6 ratio; it is not a saw guide.
  • Check the selected variant when ordering. Part 64744 identifies Rockler’s 1:8 variant and should not be used to order this 1:6 format.

Questions before you choose

Why choose a saddle marker rather than a flat slope template?

Its corner-straddling format provides references on adjoining faces. Compare that registration method with how you lay out pins and tails.

Can I change it to a 1:8 slope?

No adjustment is established. The selected marker is fixed at 1:6; the maker sells 1:8 as a separate variant.

Will it control my saw cut?

It marks the layout. A saw-guiding or clamping function is not established, so do not choose it expecting a dovetail cutting jig.
