What this tool adds
What this tool adds to your bench
The WoodRiver router plane works on an area below a surrounding reference surface. Its base registers on that surface while the cutter reaches down into the recess. That is the useful distinction when comparing it with a shoulder plane or a side-rabbet plane: choose this format when the floor of the joint is the surface you need to refine, rather than choosing by the word plane alone.
The supplied carbon-steel cutter is 1/4 inch wide and can be reversed. A positive depth stop provides a repeatable limit for the adjustment, while two handles give separate gripping points on the compact body. The base is investment-cast 304 stainless steel. The maker identifies this combination as a compact hand tool for smoothing work parallel to and below a wood surface.
Before buying, compare the cutter width and the room around the recess with the actual joint you intend to finish. The supported 1/4-inch cutter width does not establish clearance in every nominally 1/4-inch groove, and the source does not give a universal maximum recess depth. The reversible assembly offers another access direction, but its usefulness still depends on where the body can register.
This offer is for one complete router plane with the 1/4-inch blade. It does not establish fit for powered-router bits, an interchangeable cutter from a different maker or an additional fence. For adjusting the side of a groove, compare the side-rabbet model with its two blades and reversible stop. For trimming against a shoulder, compare the No. 91. Those are related workshop tools with different working contacts.
Choose for your actual work
- Compare the space for both the cutter and the supporting base, rather than using blade width alone as a fit guarantee.
- Choose by the surface you need to refine: a recess floor, a groove side or a shoulder require different working contacts.
Fit checks & limits
- Check the required recess depth, groove clearance and replacement-cutter fit for this model; a maximum working depth and cross-brand fit are not confirmed.
- Do not plan on receiving an additional fence or a powered-router cutter with this offer.
Use & care
Use the maker’s setup instructions for blade reversal and the depth stop. Include edge preparation in setup; no sharpening media is part of the supported one-plane contents.
Questions before you choose
Does the 1/4-inch blade guarantee fit in a 1/4-inch groove?
No. Check the actual opening, cutter and clearance required by the work; a nominal width alone is not a fit confirmation.
What is the maximum recess depth?
The reviewed product sources do not establish one. Confirm that requirement with the supplier before buying for a depth-critical joint.
Should I choose this or a side-rabbet plane?
Choose the router-plane arrangement for working a recess floor relative to the surrounding surface. Compare the side-rabbet plane when a groove wall is the surface that needs adjustment.
