What this tool adds
What this tool adds to your bench
This plane is for refining the sides of rabbets and grooves during joint fitting. It combines two manually adjusted blades in one tool, with a reversible, adjustable depth stop. That arrangement is the reason to compare it with a small shoulder plane: the choice depends on which side of the joint needs work and how the tool can register, rather than simply on which plane is smaller.
The removable front section gives a bullnose configuration for access at corners and stopped dadoes. The stop can be reversed for the relevant working side. These features provide different contact options within the same complete tool; they are not a claim that every stopped recess will have enough room for the plane. Check the actual opening and obstruction around the work before choosing this format.
The body is 40Cr tool steel and the blades are T10 steel, with a maker-stated hardness of RC 59–63. The hardness describes the blades, not the body or a sharpening angle. A wooden knob provides a separate gripping point. If you need a spare, give the supplier the 151239W/SRP1 references and ask for the correct blade assembly rather than assuming an iron from another WoodRiver plane will fit.
Choose it when opposed working blades and a reversible stop answer the joint-fitting problem. For a floor of a recess that must be worked parallel to the surrounding surface, compare the router plane and its downward-working cutter. For a blade that needs to register against a tenon shoulder, compare the No. 91. The supported contents here are one complete side-rabbet plane with its blades, not a replacement iron alone.
Choose for your actual work
- Match the side of the joint, room for the nose and the support for the depth stop to the actual workpiece.
- Treat groove-side adjustment and recess-floor depth as different jobs; compare the router plane if the floor is the part you need to refine.
Fit checks & limits
- Confirm the groove width and required rabbet depth with the supplier when clearance is critical; no numerical minimum width or maximum depth is confirmed.
- Match replacement cutters to the exact plane assembly. Similar material or apparent shape does not establish fit.
Use & care
Plan for sharpening and adjustment using this model’s instructions. Refer to those instructions when changing the nose, stop or blade configuration.
Questions before you choose
What changes when the nose is removed?
The maker describes a bullnose configuration for access at corners and stopped dadoes. Actual access still depends on the workpiece and obstruction.
Does a reversible stop make a separate left-hand plane unnecessary for every job?
It provides another working-side arrangement on this tool. It does not establish that the body will fit every joint or reach every obstruction.
Are the blades the generic A2 irons mentioned for other WoodRiver planes?
The model-specific specification here is T10 steel, RC59–63. Order a spare by explicit 151239W/SRP1 fit, not by a general WoodRiver-family description.
