What this tool adds
What this tool adds to your bench
The No. 91 is a joint-fitting tool. Choose it when the working edge needs to reach against the wall of a tenon shoulder, rabbet or dado, rather than selecting a general bench plane for a small-looking job. Its narrow body and sides square to the sole give it a different contact arrangement from a jack or block plane. The maker identifies these joint adjustments as its intended work.
The adjustable toe changes the throat opening ahead of the blade, while the advancement mechanism sets the blade position. WoodRiver gives a 15-degree bed and 25-degree blade angle. Keep these geometry figures separate from the throat opening and from the amount of material you intend to remove. A smaller number in the bed-angle field does not specify a permitted cutting depth.
The body itself measures 1/2 inch wide, 5-3/4 inches long and 1-7/8 inches high. With projecting controls included, the stated overall length is 6-1/2 inches and the overall height is 2-3/8 inches. These are useful distinctions when checking access around a joint or space in a fitted tool case: do not compare a body-only length with another tool’s overall length as if they were the same measure.
Compare the side-rabbet plane when the job is cleaning the side of a groove with its reversible stop and opposed blades. Compare the small chisel plane for an exposed front edge at a proud plug or local trimming point. The selected offer here contains one small No. 91 plane and blade; the larger shoulder-plane sizes shown as variants are separate tools.
Choose for your actual work
- Compare the space at the actual joint, including projecting controls; the body-only and overall measurements serve different checks.
- Choose the contact and support arrangement needed at the joint before comparing a shoulder plane with a side-rabbet or chisel plane.
Fit checks & limits
- For a replacement iron, ask for explicit No. 91 fit, including its adjustment and retaining features. Matching blade width alone is insufficient.
- Compare the actual joint access and required depth before ordering; the stated tool angles do not specify a maximum joint depth or shaving thickness.
Use & care
Include edge preparation and adjustment in setup, using the maker’s hand-plane instructions. When choosing a spare, ask for confirmed No. 91 fit rather than using body width as a substitute for a replacement-part reference.
Questions before you choose
Are the listed body and overall lengths contradictory?
They describe different extents. The 5-3/4-inch figure is the body; 6-1/2 inches is the overall length including projecting parts.
Does moving the toe change the blade angle?
The toe adjusts the throat opening. The bed and blade angles describe the cutting assembly; the blade advancement is another adjustment.
Is a larger No. 92 plane included?
No. The current selected ASIN is the No. 91 Small variant and contains one plane with its blade.
