What this tool adds

What this tool adds to your bench

The 27091 mounts on the face of a wooden workbench to hold a board between its jaws. Its7 inch jaw width is the contact span across the front, not the opening between the jaws. Compare those dimensions separately when deciding how a part will sit in the vise.

An Acme-thread main screw moves the front jaw on twin guide bars. The castings are gray iron with an orange enamel finish. This is a conventional screw-operated vise; compare the Yost M9WW if rapid jaw repositioning with a quick-release lever is important to your work.

The jaws have drilled holes for attaching wooden facings, which are not included. The front jaw also carries a steel bench dog for use with a separate bench stop when holding work along the benchtop. Plan those accessories around your bench instead of expecting the vise alone to supply every holding surface.

Plan the face mounting before ordering. The manual calls for a shim when the bench is less than 2-5/16 inches thick, and mounting hardware is not supplied. Maximum opening remains uncertain: the selected listing says 9 inches, while the maker’s table and manual say 8 inches. Confirm the selected unit’s opening if your project depends on that extra inch.

Choose for your actual work

  • Plan the face mounting and flush height against the actual bench.
  • Confirm the opening if the work needs close to the stated capacity.

Fit checks & limits

  • Maximum opening 8 versus 9 inches remains unresolved.
  • Listing package and item weights disagree; no single installation weight is asserted.
  • A separate bench stop is needed for the described benchtop dog arrangement.

Use & care

Wipe the vise clean and dry after use; remove chips from the moving parts.

The manual recommends dry graphite for the lead screw to help prevent sawdust buildup.

Check the mounting fasteners periodically and tighten them if needed.

Questions before you choose

Will it mount without changing my bench?

The manual calls for a shim if the benchtop is less than 2-5/16 inches thick, so the jaw tops can sit flush. Mounting hardware is not included; check the mounting arrangement against your bench.

Can I clamp a 9 inch-thick part between the jaws?

Do not rely on that capacity without confirmation. The selected listing says9 inches opening, but the maker’s table for 27091 says8 inches.

Why choose the quick-release Yost instead?

The M9WW adds a lever for rapid jaw repositioning and wider9 inch jaws. Compare that mechanism with the Pony’s conventional screw and with the space available on your bench.
