Hand boring

Choose the hole-making method, then check the complete drive and bit arrangement. A ratcheting brace, small gimlet and tapered kiri are different tools. An auger set supplies cutting bits, not the brace or a guarantee that every chuck accepts the shank.

Choosing within this department

Find the format your work needs

Hand drive and cutting tool are separate choices

The Robert Larson brace has a 10-inch swing and three-jaw ratcheting arrangement. That swing describes its drive format, not a published hole diameter or the chuck’s full numerical capacity. WoodOwl’s retained auger set has three selected diameters and 7/16-inch hex shanks. Confirm the complete brace/bit fit before combining them.

Small holes and tapered starts

The Robert Larson gimlet set supplies four complete loop-handled tools in 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm sizes. Kakuri’s kiri is a tapered palm-rolled format with its own selected cap and instructions. Its nominal tip size does not promise a parallel-sided bore of that diameter through the full workpiece.

Compare the working dimensions

The WoodOwl 7-1/2-inch figure is overall bit length, not guaranteed boring depth. Check the workpiece, useful cutting geometry and selected tool instructions. A gimlet size does not by itself establish a universal pilot size for every screw, timber or fitting.

Questions before you choose

What changes when I choose a ratcheting brace?

The retained Robert Larson brace can work through restricted arcs rather than requiring the same full rotation for every stroke. Check the actual working clearance and compatible bit separately; the ratchet does not establish chuck capacity.

Do the WoodOwl augers come with a brace?

The selected offer is the three-bit set. The driving tool is a separate requirement, and its chuck must accept the selected shank.

Does the kiri make a constant three-millimeter bore?

The selected tool is tapered. Its nominal tip size is not a guarantee of a parallel bore through the workpiece.
