What this tool adds
What this tool adds to your bench
Choose this guide when you want a straightforward way to hold a blade at a repeatable projection while honing. Its two sets of stepped jaws provide different gripping positions for narrow chisels and wider plane irons, rather than a separate registration assembly.
WoodRiver specifies a blade-width range from 1/16 to 2-5/8 inches. Compare the actual blade cross-section as well as its width:a nominal width range does not establish that every tapered or irregular blade will sit correctly in the jaws.
A hardened steel roller travels on the sharpening surface with the blade edge. The selected unit is a guide, not an abrasive stone, and the roller is not a grit rating. Choose the abrasive separately for the condition of the edge and the work you need to do.
The exact 03A21/MJ-817A package contains one guide. Compare the Veritas registration system when repeatable squaring and micro-bevel controls are priorities. The Kakuri KBS-50 offers a different top-clamp arrangement with side handles, which may better suit how you support a Japanese blade.
Choose for your actual work
- Check the blade’s gripping surfaces as well as width.
- Compare simple projection setup with a separate registration system.
Fit checks & limits
- No universal blade-thickness or irregular-cross-section fit is established.
- Sharpening abrasives are a separate selection.
Questions before you choose
Why are there two jaw levels?
They provide gripping positions for narrow chisels and wider plane irons. Check which contact suits the blade’s actual section.
Does the offer contain a pair of guides?
The original publisher identifies one 03A21/MJ-817A guide, and the selected unit count is one. The separate generic items field is not used to promise a pair.
When would the Veritas system add useful features?
Compare it if the separate squaring/projection jig and eccentric micro-bevel adjustment would help your repeat setup. This WoodRiver is the simpler stepped-jaw format.
